3M releases pathogen detection test for E. coli O157

3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 – E. coli O157 (including H7)

3M Food Safety has launched a detection assay for E. coli O157 which is faster than previous versions to help customers make quicker decisions.

3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 – E. coli O157 (including H7) adds to the line of next-generation tests which includes Salmonella, Listeria and Listeria monocytogenes.

The kits use proprietary 3M nanotechnology, a single assay protocol, enabling batch processing of samples and improving efficiency in the laboratory and a color-change indicator provides increased confidence during the process, said the firm.

Compared to first generation tests, assay processing time is 30% faster and instrument run time is one hour for E. coli O157 and Salmonella.

Combined with short enrichment times, eight hours for raw meat samples, customers are able to make critical decisions faster, said 3M.

John David, global marketing supervisor with 3M Food Safety, said: “With the 3M Molecular Detection Assay 2, our customers will experience a streamlined protocol with faster processing time versus most commercial foodborne pathogen tests.

“For existing customers, the transition from the first to second-generation assays will be seamless – all assays can be run simultaneously using the same compact 3M Molecular Detection Instrument, providing high efficiency and productivity in the laboratory.”

To use the assays on existing instrument, customers need to download and install a free software upgrade which has a redesigned user interface and features to help data entry and administrative control.
