Vanquish Flex address separations performance issues of UHPLC systems - Thermo

Thermo Scientific has unveiled an ultra high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) system so labs can process more samples and produce results to meet stricter regulations.

The Vanquish Flex UHPLC is designed for high resolution separation and reproducibility for advanced analyses in different liquid chromatography applications.

With an integrated modular design, customers can mix and match modules depending on demands of the application.

Thermo Scientific said users can do biocompatible analysis to get high quality and consistent data.  

As well as food applications, the firm said it is ‘ideal’ for biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical applications from drug discovery and development to batch release in quality control.

Debut at UHPLC event

Evert-Jan Sneekes, strategic marketing manager, High Performance Liquid Chromatography at Thermo Fisher, said food labs are often required to satisfy strict regulatory guidelines validating products for safe consumption.

“The Thermo Scientific Vanquish Flex coupled with Thermo Scientific mass spectrometry instruments provides robust molecular separations with unparalleled detection and identification,” he told FoodQualityNews.

“This is an ideal combination for food safety applications and regulatory reporting such as pesticides analysis, testing for mycotoxins and profiling of food products for food authenticity.”

The Vanquish Flex UHPLC was debuted at the 42nd International HPLC Conference in Geneva, Switzerland this week.

Column temperature range is 5°C to 120°C and sample temperature range using the Vanquish Charger Module is 4-40°C (≥22K below ambient at <80% RH).  

Labs need to process more samples than ever before and produce results they can trust to satisfy stricter regulations, said Sneekes.

“The Vanquish products are all designed to give more performance, higher throughput and more ease-of-use,” he said.

“That will allow labs to process a higher number of samples in more detail without adding more complexity to the analysis. Researchers can focus on the answers they need to find, trusting their equipment will deliver this.

“In the end, an increase in uptime reduces the overall cost of ownership, a benefit appreciated by all customers.”

The Vanquish Flex was built to address separations performance issues of existing UHPLC systems and modernize its usability while increasing throughput.

It is designed to provide sharp peaks at high throughputs, allowing more data to be analyzed in less time.

Improving typical systems 

Sneekes said another advantage is the modular design and set-up, improving the typical chromatography systems that are large and bulky making it difficult to adjust or maintenance.

“The detection of molecules relevant to food testing applications by UHPLC is difficult due to the complexity of the input sample matrix, which can convolute results,” he said.

“The Vanquish addresses this difficulty by combining quaternary solvent blending, enhanced column technology, and a more versatile and highly sensitive linear diode array detection, which together deliver better separations for the most complex mixtures.”

Thermo Scientific said key features include a quaternary gradient pump module, designed for robustness which provides method development flexibility while increasing throughput, operation at 1000 bar maximum pump pressure, with flow rates of up to 8 mL/min to allow for high-resolution separations and application flexibility. 

It also includes a fluorescence detector for increased sensitivity complementing the absorbance detector module for high sensitivity and extended linearity and the charged aerosol detector module for non-volatile compounds.
